A high-end German Physiks system in Philippines …
and more

Welcome to our November 2020 newsletter.

We have two items for you this month:

  • A high-end German Physiks system in The Philippines

  • An “Audio Salon” in Shanghai

We had hoped to bring you details of the new award given to our Pion power cable, but as this won’t be announced officially until just after this newsletter is sent out, it will have to be carried over until next time.

A high-end German Physiks system in Philippines

“Overall, one of the best systems we have had the pleasure of auditioning.”

L & C Audio, our distributor in The Philippines, has recently taken delivery of new high-end German Physiks system for their showroom. This comprises:

  • A pair of PQS-302 loudspeakers

  • An Emperor integrated amplifier

  • An Emperor stereo power amplifier

Even though the system is not fully optimised, it is sounding very good. Carlos Cojuangco and Leonard Co from L & C Audio kindly gave us this assessment:

“Right out of their crates, the PQS-302 and Emperor electronics conveyed a deep and wide three-dimensional soundstage with focused imaging. Bass is deep and fast. The midrange is realistic while the treble is silky. Sarah Vaughan’s 1981 album “Songs of the Beatles” sounded effortless and life-like, even at concert level volumes. We are sure the sound will get even better once we have optimized speaker placement in our showroom. Overall, one of the best systems we have had the pleasure of auditioning.”

The Emperor integrated amplifier uses the same electronics as the Emperor preamplifier and Emperor stereo power amplifier and provides an ideal solution for systems where you do not need to have a separate preamplifier.

It has two sets of unbalanced and two sets of balanced preamplifier section outputs, making it very easy to configure for bi-amped or tri-amped systems. As it shares the same power amplifier electronics as the Emperor stereo power amplifier, gain matching in multi-amp systems is easy.

The PQS-302 loudspeakers use two of our DDD drivers to produce a maximum output level of 112dB. Each power amplifier in this system can deliver 600W R.M.S into 4 ohms, allowing full advantage to be taken of this very wide dynamic range.

The PQS-302’s DDD drivers cover the range from 170Hz up to 24,000Hz - over 7 octaves. This wide range provides exceptional coherence. It also means that the mid-range, where our hearing is most acute, is kept free of any discontinuities that might be caused by the crossover point required in this region by conventional loudspeaker designs.

Here is an interesting fact about the DDD driver. ⁣ Its moving mass is under three grams, less than that of most tweeters, and yet its ability to displace air is roughly equivalent to that of a 6.5-inch woofer. This and its exceptionally wide frequency range makes the DDD driver the most advanced omnidirectional driver in the world.

In the salon in Shanghai

While Covid has lead to the cancellation of nearly all the major audio shows around the world, NC Audio, our distributor in China, has risen to the challenge by holding smaller “audio salons” around their country.

These pictures of our HRS-120 SE loudspeakers and Emperor integrated amplifier were taken at a salon held in private rooms in Shanghai in October.

These are the most attractive rooms we have ever seen used for an audio show anywhere and perfectly displayed the beautiful French walnut finish on this set of HRS-120 SEs. This finish is particularly popular with audiophiles in China.

We are told that these loudspeakers attracted a lot of compliments, both for their looks and their sound.

The HRS-120 SE is a custom version for the Chinese market of our earlier HRS-120 model. This was in turn derived from our Borderland model. The HRS-120 was replaced in our standard range by the HRS-130. This features a larger woofer (10-inch) and a revised crossover.

In this system, the HRS-120 SEs were driven by our Emperor integrated amplifier. This provides 2 x 300W RMS into 8 ohms, 2 x 600W RMS into 4 ohms and into 2 ohms, just over 2 x 1,000W RMS. The HRS-120SE presents a fairly benign load, so the Emperor integrated amplifier will have had a very easy time.

One visitor was so impressed with the venue and what he heard in our room, that he decided to make a video about the show. You can see this by clicking on the image above, or following this link.

Also in the system were an Accustic Arts Player 1 CD player and their Tube Phono II phono stage.
